Types of NHS board
The NHS has a framework of local organisations responsible for the healthcare of their community in which NHS Trusts, Primary Care Trusts, Strategic Health Authorities and NHS foundation trusts all play a part.
Each organisation has a board of directors which is expected to:
- provide leadership;
- make decisions about healthcare services and make sure that staff, facilities and finances are managed properly;
- work together as a team and take responsibility if things go wrong, as well as when they go well;
- plan for the future so that services can be steadily improved;
A good board keeps a strategic overview of the organisation and provides a framework in which managers and clinical staff can work effectively.
