Induction

The best possible start

Our recent Strategic Review recommended that induction for new chairs and non-executive directors should start as soon as they are appointed and continue throughout their first year in post. We have therefore introduced an enhanced and extended induction programme.

The National Training Group oversees the development of the programme and the training modules within it. Membership of the group is drawn from each Strategic Health Authority (SHA) area and includes representatives from the SHAs, acute, mental health and ambulance trusts, primary care trusts, foundation trusts, Monitor and the NHS Institute.

For more information on our induction programme, please contact Chris Dye: chris.dye@appointments.org.uk

A 12 month induction programme
On Appointment Appointees are sent relevant reading material including information on NHS structures, financial regimes, a glossary of terms and any other available and appropriate information.
On taking up the post Appointees receive an induction pack setting out what is expected of them and what they should expect by way of support and induction locally.
After three months Appointees attend a two-day residential course which will include presentations on key topics and interactive working sessions. Networking opportunities with non-executives from other types of organisations and from different parts of the country are a part of the course.
On-going development Appointees are offered a number of online training opportunities. These could include more complex governance issues, advanced finance modules and the most recent structural/strategic issues of the NHS and can be tailored to the specific interests, skills and experience of the individual.
First anniversary Appointees attend a final one-day course (preferably with as many of the same people from the first residential course as possible). This will include feedback from delegates on how their role is developing; review of the induction process and offer learning opportunities on recent high profile topics.

Induction courses and contents

Approximately three months into their role, chairs and non-executives will be invited to attend a two-day residential course.

The course includes presentations on key NHS topics and provides an excellent opportunity for networking with fellow non-executives.

Details of the one-day anniversary courses will be available later this year.
