Accounts guides for non-executives

The Healthcare Financial Management Association, in partnership with the Audit Commission, has published two new guides for non-executives to help them to gain a greater understanding of their organisations' annual accounts. Even for those with a strong background in accounting, some aspects of NHS finance can be immensely complicated. These guides have been written especially for those with limited financial expertise and are designed to help non-executives and other users of the accounts to understand and draw conclusions from NHS accounts.

The two guides, NHS Trust Accounts: A Guide for Non-executives and Primary Care Trust Accounts: A Guide for Non-executives, provide a plain english explanation of the four primary statements and notes that make up the annual accounts. The guides also expand on key concepts in NHS accounting and include questions non-executives may wish to ask when reviewing accounts. Free copies of the guides have been sent to all NHS trusts and PCTs and are also available on both organisations' websites:
