Strategic Review

Adding value to a 21st century Health Service
A review of the NHS public appointments process

The Appointments Commission has published the findings of its strategic review into the NHS public appointments process.

The review involved stakeholders from across the NHS and the health community.

Key highlights are:

  • The Commission will adopt a more customer-focused, flexible and inclusive way of working.
  • Induction training will be enhanced to provide better support for new appointees.
  • A more flexible and streamlined appraisal process will be introduced, giving greater local autonomy to trusts.
  • A flexible termination process will be developed for use when urgent action is needed to restore public confidence.
  • The Commission will promote diversity in NHS public appointments to encourage a wider range of applicants.
